3 OJHL Players Selected In 2010 NHL Entry Draft & 4 Graduated Players Selected

June 28, 2010, Burlington, Ontario - The OJHL is proud to announce today that three players from the league were selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, second most among all Canadian Junior ‘A’ leagues behind only the BCHL, who had four.  Players selected include:

Newmarket Hurricanes          Round 3 (87th overall)

Florida Panthers                     Zach Hyman
(Hamilton Red Wings)            Round 5 (123rd overall)

Alexander Guptill of the Orangeville Crushers was selected in the 3rd round, 77th overall by the Dallas Stars.  The native of Newmarket, Ontario is a 6’3”, 175 lbs. left winger who played the second half of the 2009-10 OJHL season as a member of the Orangeville Crushers after a mid-season trade from the Brampton Capitals.  Guptill recorded 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points in only 29 games played.  The power forward was a member of Team Canada East at the 2009 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge and has committed to attend the University of Michigan in 2011-12.

Julian Melchiori of the Newmarket Hurricanes was selected in the 3rd round, 87th overall by the Atlanta Thrashers.  The native of Richmond Hill, Ontario is a 6’3”, 186 lbs. defenceman that has played the last two seasons with the Hurricanes and following the 2009-10 season, was awarded the B.J. Munro Memorial Award as the OHA’s Top Prospect.  The nephew of NHL senior vice president of hockey operations, Mike Murphy, Melchiori recorded 23 points in 39 games and 11 points in the playoffs while leading Newmarket to the OHA Buckland Cup Final versus Oakville.  Melchiori has committed to attend the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in 2010-11.

Zach Hyman of the Hamilton Red Wings was selected in the 5th round, 123rd overall by the Florida Panthers.  The native of Toronto, Ontario is a 6’, 182 lbs. centre that has played the last two seasons with the Red Wings and was the club’s leading scorer with 35 goals, 40 assists and 75 points during the 2009-10 season.  A member of the CCHL Young Stars Team in the “Battle of Ontario,” Hyman has committed to attend Princeton University in 2011-12.

Dalton Smith, formerly of the Whitby Fury, was selected in the 2nd round, 34th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets.  The native of Oshawa, Ontario is a 6’2”, 203 lbs. left winger that spent this past season with the Ottawa 67’s of the OHL.  Smith, whose father Derrick spent 10 years in the NHL, split the 2008-09 season between Ottawa and Whitby, recording 23 points in 40 games for the Fury.

Philip Lane, formerly of the Buffalo Junior Sabres, was selected in the 2nd round, 52nd overall by the Phoenix Coyotes.  The native of Rochester, New York is a 6’2”, 194 lbs. right winger that spent this past season with the Brampton Battalion of the OHL.  Lane recorded 42 points in 45 games with the Junior Sabres in 2008-09.

Jason Wilson, formerly of the Toronto Junior Canadians, was selected in the 5th round, 130th overall by the New York Rangers.  The native of Richmond Hill, Ontario is a 6’2”, 205 lbs. left winger that spent the past two seasons in the OHL as a member of the London Knights and Owen Sound Attack.  Wilson recorded 17 points in 37 games with the Junior Canadians in 2007-08.

Cody Rosen, formerly of the Kingston Voyageurs, was selected in the 7th round, 185th overall by the New York Islanders.  The native of Kingston, Ontario is a 5’11”, 180 lbs. netminder that spent this past season with the Clarkson University Golden Knights of the ECAC.  Rosen recorded a 14-3-1 record with a 2.90 goals against average with the Voyageurs in 2008-09.
